Overview

One of Skardu's last unphotographed valleys

Tormik Valley is a remote alpine valley in the Roundu Subdivision of Skardu District, Gilgit-Baltistan, about 40 kilometres and a two-hour 4x4 drive from Skardu city. It is best known for the Broq, a high-altitude green meadow, the dramatic granite spires that rise around it, and a small glacial lake tucked into its upper pastures.

While neighbouring valleys like Basho and Shigar have become regular stops on northern Pakistan itineraries, Tormik has stayed largely off the radar. Locals here still use the valley the way they always have: grazing livestock in the Broq, fetching water from glacier-fed streams, and gathering for a game of polo on the open turf each summer. For travellers, that means fewer crowds, a closer look at Balti mountain life, and a base camp for one of Baltistan's more demanding high-passes — the Kulankae route into Stak Valley.

Heart of the Valley

The Broq: Tormik's green meadow

Broq is the Balti word for a high-altitude pasture, and Tormik's is one of the finest in Roundu — a stretch of lush plains fed by freshwater streams and springs, ringed by forest and granite. Historically it has served as a ground for polo, the traditional sport of Gilgit-Baltistan, and in summer families from across Roundu still gather here to play.

It's also where most visitors end up pitching camp. The flat, grassy ground, reliable water source, and open views of the surrounding peaks make it the natural base for anyone exploring Tormik on foot.

Geology & Climbing

Granite walls climbers compare to Yosemite

Tormik's defining feature is its rock: clean granite spires and walls that jut out of green hillsides with almost no warning. Climbers who've visited have drawn comparisons to Yosemite's big walls — a bold claim for a valley most people haven't heard of, but the cliffs make a strong case on sight alone.

The geology shifts as the valley climbs. Closer to the Indus River, the rock is granite, amphibolite, and ultramafic stone. Higher up, in the central and upper valley, it gives way to metasedimentary and metavolcanic formations, fractured over time by movement along the Main Karakoram Thrust. For geology enthusiasts as much as climbers, it's a valley worth slowing down in.

Where to Stay

Camping is the standard, not the backup plan

Formal accommodation in Tormik is minimal, so camping is simply how most people experience the valley — and given the views, that's not a downside. The Broq meadow offers flat, sheltered ground close to water, with granite peaks framing the skyline in almost every direction.

Bring everything you need before you arrive — see our high-altitude packing checklist if you're planning ahead. Villages along the route stock only basic supplies, and there's no guarantee of finding gear, fuel, or specific food items once you're in the valley itself.

Hidden Spot

Khlarxing: a lake most visitors never find

Tucked further into Tormik's high pastures is Khlarxing, a small glacial lake known mainly to locals and the few trekkers who push beyond the main meadow. On a still morning, it turns into a near-perfect mirror of the snow-capped peaks behind it — one of the better reasons to stay an extra night rather than treat Tormik as a day trip.

There's no marked trail to the lake, so a local guide makes the difference between finding it easily and wandering the wrong ridge for an hour.

For Trekkers

Beyond Tormik: the Kulankae Pass to Stak Valley

Tormik isn't only a destination in itself — it's also a gateway. Between July and mid-September, once the snow has melted enough to open the route, trekkers can cross the Kulankae mountain pass from Tormik into Stak Valley, the largest valley in the Roundu Subdivision by both area and population.

It's a serious undertaking rather than a casual walk: the pass sits buried under snow for most of the year, and the route demands proper trekking experience, a local guide, and full self-sufficiency. For anyone already comfortable at altitude, though, it's one of the more rewarding ways to link two of Baltistan's quietest valleys without backtracking to Skardu.

Practical travel tips

Carry cash

ATMs are scarce to non-existent in Tormik and the neighbouring Basho, Bilamik, and Chunda valleys. Withdraw what you need in Skardu first.

Hire a local guide

There are no marked trails to spots like Khlarxing, and a Balti guide also helps with translation, route-finding, and local etiquette.

Pack for altitude

Layered clothing, sturdy boots, and a solar charger or power bank — electricity is unreliable this far from Skardu.

Travel light on plastic

There's no waste infrastructure in the valley. Pack reusable containers and carry your rubbish back out with you.
