What Is Manthokha Waterfall?

Manthokha Waterfall is a glacial waterfall in Kharmang District, roughly 80–90 km from Skardu. It drops about 100 to 110 feet down a sheer rock face into the valley below, where the meltwater joins the Shyok River flowing through the canyon.

In Balti, “Manthokha” roughly translates to a place where water falls — functional, if not poetic. What the name doesn’t capture is what the setting actually looks like: a narrow canyon cut between desert-coloured cliffs, suddenly interrupted by a ribbon of white water and, around the base, a small pocket of green that seems too lush for its surroundings.

It gained popularity in the last few years as more travellers started combining it with the route to Basho Valley or the Ghanche District, and the infrastructure — rafting, wooden cabins — followed quickly after the attention.

How to Reach Manthokha Waterfall

The good news is that Manthokha is easier to reach than most places of equivalent beauty in Gilgit-Baltistan. You don’t need a 4×4 for the main road, though one makes the final approach smoother.

• From Skardu: Drive east along the Indus/Shyok river road toward Kharmang — roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. The road is mostly paved and manageable in a standard car during summer.
• Turn-off: There’s a marked turning for Manthokha; keep your GPS on because the signage isn’t always reliable.
• From Khaplu: If you’re coming from Ghanche District, Manthokha sits on the way and makes a natural stop rather than a detour.

• Walk to the base of the falls. A short trail from the road brings you to the rocks directly below Manthokha — the spray is strong enough to soak you in July.

• Book the cabin in advance. Don’t assume walk-up availability in July or August — you’ll end up sleeping in the car or making a three-hour drive back to Skardu in the dark.
• Wear waterproof shoes. If you walk to the base of Manthokha Waterfall, you will get wet. The spray radius is wider than it looks from the road.
• Don’t visit after heavy rain. The access track can become slippery and water levels make rafting genuinely dangerous. Check conditions before setting out.
