What the Concordia trek in the Karakoram really is

Concordia is a glacier junction, not a summit, and it is the base for the K2 Base Camp trek.

Concordia is where the Baltoro Glacier meets the Godwin-Austen Glacier.

From this open ice plaza you can see several of the world’s highest peaks at once, including K2 (8,611 m).

The Concordia trek in the Karakoram is a long glacier walk with no technical climbing, but it is remote and hard on the legs and lungs.

Most people reach the trailhead from Skardu. If you are still choosing between routes, read our guide to hiking near Skardu besides K2 first.

Views on the Concordia trek in the Karakoram

The reward is a 360-degree glacier panorama; the best light is early morning.

From Paiju and Urdukas you see granite towers, and from Goro II and Concordia the giants appear: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV and Mitre Peak.

Clear mornings give the sharpest views, because cloud often builds by afternoon.

Best season for the Concordia trek in 2026-2027

Late June to August is the main window; book early because camps and porters fill up.

Snow and river levels make early summer slower, and by September the weather can turn.

Check forecasts before departure with the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

For the 2027 season, confirm dates with your operator by early spring.

Permits, guides and park rules

Treat permits as an operator job, and confirm current rules before you pay anything.

The route passes through Central Karakoram National Park, and Gilgit-Baltistan trekking rules apply.

A registered local operator normally arranges permits, a guide, cook and porters. Rules and fees change, so ask for the current list in writing.

Altitude and glacier safety

Go slowly, drink water, and descend if symptoms worsen.

Safety Note

Headache, nausea and poor sleep can signal acute mountain sickness.

Breathlessness at rest, a wet cough, confusion or loss of balance are emergencies: descend at once and get help.

See the CDC guidance on altitude illness.

Field Logistics

There is no mobile signal on most of the glacier.

Carry offline maps, a satellite communicator if possible, trekking poles, a down jacket and sun protection.

Insurance should cover high-altitude evacuation.
