Quick answer

Cold Desert Skardu is a high-altitude sand desert at 2,226 m, close to Skardu Airport in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The dunes turn white with snow in winter and glow gold at sunrise and sunset.

The most visited part, Katpana, is a short drive from town and works as a half-day stop.

Cold Desert Skardu at a Glance

The Cold Desert, known locally as Katpana, is a belt of dunes in Skardu Valley that sits at 2,226 m and is often covered in snow in winter.

If you land at Skardu Airport (IATA: KDU), Cold Desert Skardu is one of the easiest places to see on your first afternoon.

The Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department lists it as Katpana Cold Desert, called Nakpo Biama in Balti, and describes vast dunes that are sometimes covered in snow in winter.

The desert technically runs from the Indus River south of Skardu up to New Ranga village. The part most visitors use sits near Katpana Lake and the airport.

Our team at Tormik Valley Tourism, a Skardu-based operator, often builds a short stop here into longer Baltistan itineraries because it needs little time and no hiking.

How to Reach Cold Desert Skardu

The dunes are a short drive from central Skardu, near the airport and Katpana Lake, so a taxi or hired driver is the easiest way in.

How far is the Cold Desert from Skardu town?

Distances vary by source and by where in the dunes you stop. One travel guide puts Katpana about 6 km from central Skardu, not far from the airport.

Agree your drop-off point with the driver, since the dunes cover a wide area and some edges are close to homes and new building.

Can you walk from Skardu Airport?

The airport is close to the main visiting area, but dunes, roads and private land make the route hard to judge on foot.

A short taxi ride is simpler and lets you tell the driver to wait while you walk the sand.

Best Time to Visit Cold Desert Skardu

Come in winter for snow on the dunes, or at sunrise and sunset in any season for the best light. Check road and weather conditions before winter trips.

Cold Desert Skardu in winter

Winter is when the desert earns its name. Snow settles over the dunes and leaves golden sand showing in patches, a contrast photographers travel for.

Temperatures drop well below comfortable levels, so dress for real cold and keep your visit short on windy days.

Sunrise and sunset light

In warmer months the dunes dry out and the sun is strong, while nights stay cold. Early morning and evening are the best times to walk.

Low sun brings out the ripples in the sand and warms the peaks behind, as the opening photo shows.

What to Do at the Cold Desert in Skardu

Walk the dunes, photograph the ridgelines at low sun, and use the stop as an easy first outing while you adjust to Skardu’s height.

Most visitors walk to a dune crest and look back across the plain to the mountains. Footprints show where people have climbed, so choose a clean ridge for photos.

A telephoto lens compresses the peaks behind the sand, while a wide lens suits the ripples in the foreground.

Keep the visit flexible. An hour or two covers it, which leaves time for other Skardu stops such as the lakes and the fort.

The area around the dunes is changing as buildings spread, so expect some sections to feel quieter than others.

Katpana vs Sarfaranga Cold Desert

Katpana is the dune area close to Skardu Airport. Sarfaranga is a separate cold desert farther out along the road towards Shigar.

Both are high-altitude dune fields in the Skardu area, and visitors often mix the names. Katpana suits a quick stop near town.

Sarfaranga lies farther out, with distances in travel guides ranging from about 13 to 30 km, and some visitors combine it with a trip to Shigar.

If you want one specific place, tell your driver by name before you leave.

What to Pack and Stay Safe

Bring warm layers, a windproof shell, sunglasses and water, and keep winter visits short on windy days.

Wind lifts fine sand, so bring sunglasses and a scarf or buff to cover your face.

Add a warm hat and gloves in winter, sun cream in summer and shoes you do not mind filling with sand.

Carry water, because there are no shops on the dunes themselves.

Safety note

Winter air here is very cold, and wind makes it feel colder. Go back to the vehicle if your fingers or toes go numb.

At 2,226 m most people feel fine, but if you get a headache or nausea after arriving in Skardu, rest and drink water before heading out.

Respectful Travel at the Dunes

Take all rubbish with you, stay off farmland and private plots, and ask before photographing local people.

The dunes sit beside homes and farmland, so keep to open sand.

Carry out everything you bring, including bottles and wrappers, and do not drive vehicles onto soft sand without a local driver who knows the ground.

Ask before taking portraits, especially of women and children, and keep noise down near houses.

Dress modestly, greet people politely and remember that this is a living landscape for local families, not a theme park.

Plan Your Trip with a Local Team

A local driver knows where to park, which section is quietest and when the light is best.
