K2 Base Camp vs Everest Base Camp comes down to this: Everest is higher and busier but easier to organise, while K2 is remote, colder on the glacier and far more demanding.

Both start from a road head, but only one has lodges all the way. Here is how they compare, from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan to Lukla in Nepal.

Quick AnswerK2 Base Camp (about 5,150 m) is the harder trek: it follows the Baltoro Glacier, needs camping, porters and a cook, and runs in summer. Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is higher but uses teahouses and a marked path. Choose Everest for comfort, K2 for wilderness.

Altitude and Difficulty

Everest Base Camp sits about 200 m higher, but K2 is the tougher walk because of terrain and remoteness.

The Everest trail climbs through Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), Dingboche (4,410 m) and Gorak Shep (5,164 m) with planned acclimatisation days.

Paths are clear and lodges give you a bed each night.

K2 is different. You walk on moraine and ice for days, cross rivers, and camp. Weather turns fast and help is far away.

Fitness matters, but so does experience with long, self-contained trekking days.

Route and Trek Length

Everest is roughly 65 km one way from Lukla; K2 is longer, running from Askole up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and on to base camp .

The K2 route passes Paiju, Urdukas, Goro II and Concordia, where K2 comes into view. From Skardu, the jeep ride to Askole takes most of a day.

Everest begins with the Kathmandu to Lukla flight, which weather can delay.

Cost and Permits

Everest Base Camp costs less; K2 needs full camping logistics for every day.

Published 2026 prices for a supported K2 Base Camp trek run from about US$2,750 with Pakistani operators to US$9,500 and up with international operators (Adventure Consultants, Apricot Tours, checked 5 October 2026).

Everest Base Camp usually costs less because teahouses replace camping crews. The K2 price covers porters, cook, tents, food and jeeps.

Everest needs a Sagarmatha National Park permit and a local municipality permit.

K2 needs a Central Karakoram National Park permit and a registered operator in Gilgit-Baltistan ; confirm current fees and rules with your operator.

Check the Nepal Tourism Board for current Nepal requirements.

Best Season

Go to K2 in summer (June to August) and to Everest in spring or autumn.

The Baltoro is passable mainly in summer.

Everest’s clearest skies come in March to May and September to November; winter is cold and monsoon months bring cloud and leeches on the lower trail.

Altitude Sickness Safety

Descend at once if symptoms worsen; never climb higher with them.

Safety NoteAMS: headache, nausea, dizziness, poor sleep. HAPE: breathless at rest, wet cough. HACE: confusion, stumbling, severe headache. Rest, hydrate and descend if symptoms worsen. HAPE and HACE are emergencies. Read the CDC Yellow Book for altitude guidance.

Which Trek Should You Choose?

Pick Everest for comfort and a clear route; pick K2 for isolation and a harder challenge.

First high-altitude trek? Start with Everest Base Camp. Experienced, comfortable camping for weeks, and drawn to the Karakoram? K2 rewards the effort.

Whichever you choose, book a licensed operator and allow acclimatisation days. K2 Base Camp vs Everest Base Camp is a choice between wilderness and convenience.
