Manthokha Waterfall doesn’t appear on most northern Pakistan itineraries, and that’s a shame. It sits about 80 km from Skardu in Kharmang District, Gilgit-Baltistan, and most people drive the Skardu–Khaplu road without ever turning off for it. The ones who do tend to stay longer than planned. A 100-foot waterfall crashing into a glacier-fed river, wooden cabin guesthouses with waterfall-facing windows, and a stretch of white water that has made Manthokha Waterfall one of the most underrated adventure destinations in the country.

What Is Manthokha Waterfall?

Manthokha Waterfall is a glacial waterfall in Kharmang District, roughly 80–90 km from Skardu. It drops about 100 to 110 feet down a sheer rock face into the valley below, where the meltwater joins the Shyok River flowing through the canyon.

In Balti, “Manthokha” roughly translates to a place where water falls — functional, if not poetic. What the name doesn’t capture is what the setting actually looks like: a narrow canyon cut between desert-coloured cliffs, suddenly interrupted by a ribbon of white water and, around the base, a small pocket of green that seems too lush for its surroundings.

It gained popularity in the last few years as more travellers started combining it with the route to Basho Valley or the Ghanche District, and the infrastructure — rafting, wooden cabins — followed quickly after the attention.

How to Reach Manthokha Waterfall

The good news is that Manthokha is easier to reach than most places of equivalent beauty in Gilgit-Baltistan. You don’t need a 4×4 for the main road, though one makes the final approach smoother.

  • From Skardu: Drive east along the Indus/Shyok river road toward Kharmang — roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. The road is mostly paved and manageable in a standard car during summer.
  • Turn-off: There’s a marked turning for Manthokha; keep your GPS on because the signage isn’t always reliable.
  • From Khaplu: If you’re coming from Ghanche District, Manthokha sits on the way and makes a natural stop rather than a detour.
Tip: book your cabin guesthouse before arriving in peak season (July–August). The few that exist fill up fast and there’s no real alternative accommodation right at the falls.

Best Time to Visit Manthokha Waterfall

June to September is the reliable window. Outside this, snow can block the mountain roads and the waterfall itself carries significantly less volume.

🌊 June – July

Glacial melt is at its peak — Manthokha Waterfall is at maximum power and volume. Rafting conditions are also at their best. Busiest period.

🌤 August – September

Volume starts to taper slightly but the weather is more stable. Fewer visitors, especially into September. Best for photography without crowds in the frame.

River Rafting at Manthokha Waterfall

This is what most repeat visitors say they remember most about Manthokha. The Shyok River through the canyon runs cold, fast, and clear, and the rafting stretch that passes near the base of the waterfall is genuinely spectacular — you’re in the water looking up at a 100-foot cascade while the current pushes you through.

What to know before you book

  • Local operators run rafting trips from June through August — availability drops off in September as water levels fall.
  • Life vests and helmets are provided; you don’t need prior experience for the standard route.
  • The rapids are classified at a moderate level — exciting but not extreme. Suitable for most adults and older teenagers.
  • Book through your guesthouse or a Skardu-based operator if possible, rather than walk-up on the day.

Where to Stay Near Manthokha Waterfall

The wooden cabin guesthouses that have sprung up near the falls are the main reason overnight stays at Manthokha have become popular. They’re basic — no room service, limited hot water — but the setting more than makes up for it.

Wooden cabin guesthouses

Several small operators have built timber cabins close enough that you can hear the waterfall from your bed. A few have large windows designed to frame the cascade directly — in theory. In practice, the view depends on exactly which cabin you’re in, so ask specifically when booking.

Be realistic: “basic” means basic. These aren’t boutique hotels. The cabins are clean and comfortable in the way a tent upgrade is comfortable — better than nothing, meaningful within context, not something to Instagram as luxury.

Things to Do at Manthokha Waterfall

  • Walk to the base of the falls. A short trail from the road brings you to the rocks directly below Manthokha — the spray is strong enough to soak you in July.
  • River rafting. The obvious one. Even if you’ve rafted before, the setting here is different. See the section above.
  • Photography. The combination of canyon walls, fall, turquoise water, and scrubby green vegetation is unusual for Gilgit-Baltistan, which tends more toward arid mountain scenery.
  • Side trips from Kharmang. The district has other points of interest, including the Kharmang Fort and some interesting rock art sites. Worth mentioning to your driver or guesthouse owner.
  • Combine with Deosai National Park. Skardu → Manthokha → back to Skardu → Deosai is a logical 3–4 day loop from a Skardu base.

What a Trip to Manthokha Waterfall Costs

  • Return jeep / car from Skardu: PKR 6,000–10,000 depending on vehicle type and whether you negotiate a shared trip.
  • Wooden cabin guesthouse: roughly PKR 3,000–6,000 per room per night, higher in July–August.
  • River rafting: PKR 1,500–3,000 per person depending on the operator and route length.
  • Food: basic meals are available near the falls for PKR 400–800; pack extras if you’re staying overnight.

A well-planned two-day Manthokha trip from Skardu — transport, one night in a cabin, rafting, and meals — typically comes to PKR 12,000–18,000 per person when split across a small group.

8 Things to Know Before You Visit

  • Book the cabin in advance. Don’t assume walk-up availability in July or August — you’ll end up sleeping in the car or making a three-hour drive back to Skardu in the dark.
  • Wear waterproof shoes. If you walk to the base of Manthokha Waterfall, you will get wet. The spray radius is wider than it looks from the road.
  • Don’t visit after heavy rain. The access track can become slippery and water levels make rafting genuinely dangerous. Check conditions before setting out.
  • Carry cash. No ATMs anywhere near Kharmang. Withdraw in Skardu and take more than you think you’ll need.
  • Network signal is patchy. Jazz has some coverage in parts of Kharmang but don’t rely on a stable connection.
  • Evenings get cold fast. Even in summer, once the sun drops behind the canyon walls the temperature falls sharply. Pack a layer.
  • Ask your guesthouse about rafting. They usually have relationships with local operators and can arrange better rates than walk-up on the day.
  • Leave it as you find it. The canyon around Manthokha Waterfall is still clean. It takes almost nothing to ruin that — pack out everything you bring in.
