Shangrila Resort Skardu wraps around a heart-shaped lake in Baltistan, with pine slopes behind it and the Karakoram rising over the top. History of Shangrila Resort in Skardu

Shangrila Resort opened in 1983 as the first resort hotel in Skardu, founded by Brig. (R) Muhammad Aslam Khan and named after the paradise in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon.

The resort’s own website says it was the first resort built for tourism in the northern areas. It describes its founder, Brig. Muhammad Aslam Khan, as the first commander of the Northern Scouts. The name comes from Hilton’s fictional valley, and the resort markets itself as “Heaven on Earth”.

Lower Kachura Lake now carries the resort’s name too. Many people call it Shangrila Lake. The Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department lists the Kachura lakes at about 2,500 metres above sea level, with the lower lake inside the resort grounds.

One landmark trips up first-time visitors: a decommissioned aircraft parked near the lake. Look for the white fuselage behind the trees in the autumn photo below.

How to Reach Shangrila Resort Skardu

The resort is roughly 20 km from Skardu city on the Skardu–Khaplu road; the drive takes about 30–40 minutes by car or jeep.

Skardu has an airport with direct flights from Islamabad (IATA: KDU), and you can also come by road along the Karakoram Highway (N-35) and the Indus River. From the city, follow the Skardu–Khaplu road, then turn off toward Lower Kachura village. Local drivers know the turn well, so you rarely need more than “Shangrila” as a destination.

3. Take the diversion toward Lower Kachura village.
4. Enter the resort grounds on the lakeshore.

Things to Do at Shangrila Resort Skardu

Take a boat on the spring-fed lake, eat at the pagoda restaurant, walk to the view point, and use the resort as a base for Upper Kachura.

Boating on Lower Kachura Lake

The resort lists boating on its natural spring-water lake. Go early. The water is calm in the morning, and reflections of the red roofs are at their sharpest before the wind picks up.

Eat at the Pagoda

The red pagoda is the building in every photo. The resort calls its pagoda restaurant one of its most famous attractions. Even if you are not staying, it is the natural place for a long lunch by the water.

Mini zoo, café and view point

Beyond the restaurants and snack bar, the resort lists a mini zoo with wild birds, jogging and trekking tracks, and a view point with a wide look over the mountains and the lake. Allow an hour for the view point alone if you like photography.

Cottages and Where to Stay Near Lower Kachura Lake

Rooms are in lakeside cottages dotted along the shore; check room types, rates and availability directly with the resort before you book.

The cottages sit among rose beds and orchard trees, with wooden verandas and the same red roofs you see from across the lake. The resort website says its cottages are placed along the lakeside so rooms get lake views.

Best Time to Visit Shangrila Resort Skardu

Summer brings green slopes and open roads; autumn brings gold poplars and calm water; winter is quiet and cold.

In summer the hillsides turn bright green and the lake reflects blue sky. In autumn the poplars go yellow and the air clears. Winter is cold, and one source reports the lake surface freezes. Check road and weather conditions with your driver before a winter trip.

Places to Visit Near Shangrila Resort

Upper Kachura Lake is a 20–30 minute uphill walk from the lower lake; Khaplu’s forts and Skardu city are longer day trips.

• Upper Kachura Lake: quieter and less developed. The Gilgit-Baltistan e-tourism site describes a 20–30 minute uphill hike from Lower Kachura. Carry water, as there are no shops by the lake.
• Khaplu: historic forts, reachable by jeep along the same road.
